While we are all aware of the natural sweetness of fruit, some folks do not know that its flavor can be improved upon when you season it with salt. My husband was one of those people. He was simply amazed at how much better watermelon tasted with just a pinch of these white morsels! When you season fruit with salt, the taste difference is significant. Needless to say, my husband now enjoys his watermelon with his favorite summer seasoning – salt.
Watermelon is not the only fruit that is enhanced with a pinch of salt. The variety of salt you use is up to you; some people use regular table salt. We prefer to use kosher or sea salt. Melons, pineapples, strawberries, green apples, peaches, tomatoes (and more) also benefit from this flavor booster. Another added bonus of salt seasoning is that it reduces the bitterness of fruit that has yet to ripen. Most of us – at one time or another – have bitten into a bitter or unripened piece of fruit.
When it comes to easy and tasty foods for the hot summer months, you might want to consider introducing salt to your fruit. They soon will become fast friends! At a time of the year when a variety of fruit abounds, salt just might end up being your favorite seasoning. Bring out your salt box, for this is the time to slice and season!
