Go Fly a Kite … at Treasure Island Beach!

– Posted in: Things To Do, Tips, Thrills & Tales
Kite Flying | January weather in Florida is usually ideal for flying kites, with mild temperatures and steady winds.

The 19th Annual Treasure Island Sport Kite Competition and Festival returns to Florida during the Martin Luther King holiday weekend, January 16th – 17th 2016.  It is a two-day event offering plenty of opportunities to have fun with family and friends on one of the best kite flying beaches in the country! The fun takes place directly on Treasure Island Beach, behind the Thunderbird Beach Resort, located at 10700 Gulf Blvd, Treasure Island, FL.

Basically the sky behind the Thunderbird will be a rainbow of colors as kites of all shapes and sizes take flight in a weekend long show set to music. Bring your own kite to join in on the fun, or if you don’t have a kite – not to worry, there will be vendors on site to sell you one!  The competition fields will be located directly behind the Thunderbird and Bilmar resorts (parking is provided for guests who are staying at either).  Public parking is located ¼ mile further south along Gulf Blvd.

Saturday will offer flying demonstrations, a pair & team flying exhibition, and kite flying lessons – provided by champion Eastern League Kite Flyers.  On Sunday, the festival kicks into high gear with the sport kite competition, featuring a full day of talented kite flyers performing to music.  Even when the sun goes down, the fun will continue with night kite flying (weather & wind permitting).

Since Monday is a holiday, you might want to consider making it a 3-day holiday weekend that you won’t soon forget.  January weather in Florida is usually ideal for flying kites, with mild temperatures and steady winds.  This event is sanctioned by the Eastern League Sport Kite Association.  For more information on the event, visit the League’s web site, www.easternleague.net or contact Windworks at (727) 320-9463.
